As the Final Table for the World Food Championships is on, the stakes are higher than ever; and the official Food Champ will be announced. Along with the coveted title comes a large cash prize to the tune of $100,000 dollars. As a food writer and recipe developer, finding oneself surrounded by those that share the same passion is truly an astounding experience. I first heard about the World Food Championship or WFC, from my fellow Food Network Star Finalist Nancy Manlove. I must add that Nancy is a competitive chef and has many food titles under her belt! Food Network Star was my very first cooking competition and initial introduction into the world of food sport. Nancy competed at the World Food Championships this year, and I came down a day early to cheer her on. It was early that day that I happened to meet two wonderful new friends who were also competing, and would ultimately take home the title of Seafood Champ with a cash prize of $ 10,000 dollars. Those wonderful individuals were Kim Banick and her sous chef, Amy Barrett of, My World Simplified. They were amazing tour guides as we made the rounds in the cooking arena. As we were walking the tent and chatting I knew then that this was the start of a truly astounding experience. Later that evening the media summit kicked off and our wonderful hostess, Suzanne Clark rolled out the red carpet for us. We were treated to elaborate dinners at Orange Beach’s top restaurant’s thanks to Kay and Ally from the CVB and given access to penthouse views of the Gulf while enjoying fresh rolled Sushi at our digs for the week, Turquoise Place. One of Spectrum Resorts elaborate properties, our rooms featured cozy fireplaces and a hot tub on the balcony. Each day was filled with Mystery Basket Challenges, celebrity cooking demos, and E.A.T. methodology courses to get us all primed up for the judging experience, just to name a few.
The concept of the E.A.T. methodology course is ingenious and prompts individuals to judge entries consistently using three key criteria: Execution, Appearance, and Taste. As we wrapped up the week; and said our goodbyes, I left with a wealth of knowledge and a whole new group of foodie friends.
