Now that the threat of cold weather has slipped on by, at least in Alabama, it’s now time to get out and plant some containers. Container gardening is a fabulous way to maximize space and also add color, texture, and nature to decks, porches, and courtyards. Speaking of courtyards, I am smack-dab in the middle, well, beginning stages of building one of my very own for my entryway. But more about that later. In the meantime, let’s talk about some containers that I threw together for my porch. My porch pretty much is described in the same terminology as the Sahara desert. It literally gets the full blown, hot as hell, summer sun. So, naturally all the plants that I choose are sun loving and for the most part draught resistant. The great thing about most of these plant varieties lies in the fact that they are extremely forgiving and easy to keep alive. Which makes my life all the easier. As far as my containers, I love the old fashioned terracotta or stone varieties. Terracotta is a great choice because they tend to hold moisture and allow the passage of air, unlike their plastic counterparts. Either work just fine at the end of the day. Just a matter of personal preference. Choose between three to five varieties of plants for each container, depending on the size. I like to incorporate a trailing plant to spill over the side, a tall variety for height, and a big bloomer that spreads for space in between. A combination of the above is ideal for large containers. Some of my favorite plant varieties are:Geranium “Calliope” Scarlett Fire
Geranium “American Cherry Rose”

Begin planting filling the container with a high-quality potting medium. I use Bacto. For drainage, plastic bottles or packing peanuts are ideal. Place the taller variety toward the back or in the center. Placement is determined by the container’s location. From there, distribute each variety depending on bloom and shape in accordance. Balancing so that an equilibrium is achieved.
Trailing plants should be placed right at the edge of the pot. Saturate immediately and water daily, or as needed. Fertilize once or twice a month.
I love making the container pots
