Simple tool boxes crafted from wood scraps are a great multi-functional object to add to your home. I discovered this first hand when I recently moved into my newly renovated, drawerless kitchen. Purposefully void of drawers in keeping with a slightly industrial feel, the only thing my kitchen lacked was a place for silverware. Cue the wooden tool box in the garden shed. The long, slender box was perfect for organization and the contents are easily accessible. So, right at home on my kitchen island, the old wooden tool box is laden with spoons, forks, and knives of every sort imaginable. Plus, with a very sturdy handlebar, it’s completely portable. Meaning a buffet line can be thrown up just about anywhere. The boxes are not just limited to the kitchen either. Fill them with beautiful, seasonal items to create a dazzling display sure to garner lots of attention. The best part, they are so very simple to make from wood scraps collecting dust in the garage. Here’s how I make mine.

1. Use the skill saw and cut 3 separate boards that measure 22″x 5.5″ that will form the bottom and sides. Next, cut out the end pieces in polygon shape as pictured above. 5 sides will measure 5.5″ and the top measurement will be 2″. Lastly, use the 5/8 in. drill bit to drill a hole in each end piece as means for attaching the rope handle. The tool box is now ready to assemble.

4. Wrap a small piece of tape around each end of the rope, and guide the rope through the opening in each end piece. Knot the rope by forming a knot and tightly pulling the knot to the board, avoiding extra slack. Repeat for the opposite end. Stain or paint the box if desired. Use the wooden box for entertaining, decorating, planting, or holding household essentials.
