Poinsettias and evergreen trees are great options for Christmas planters. But what’s even better and more budget-friendly you ask? Pine cones. Pine cones are readily available pretty much anywhere in Alabama, making them easy to gather and outfit your planters or pots with a bit of Christmas cheer. Trimmings from the Christmas tree add some greenery. A plastic container or floral foam form the basis on which this arrangement is built. The amount of materials will vary on the size of the container.
MATERIALS:
30 Pine cones, amount will vary on size & container
Plastic bowl or floral foam
Moss
Fir clippings
Floral Moss
Hot glue gun & glue sticks
STEPS:
1. Insert a plastic bowl into the container that fits snugly and doesn’t move around. A piece of floral foam can just as easily be used.
2. Create a base layer by laying out the pine cones in a single layer around the perimeter of the container. Secure the pine cones together with a drop of hot glue. Repeat this process for each layer, alternating the cones so they fit uniformly together. The layers will have a tapering effect and end with a single cone crowning the top. Cones of varying sizes can be used to fills spaces and accent.
3. Use the trimmings from the Christmas tree and insert clippings around the arrangement for added visual appeal. Glue small amounts of floral moss around the base and throughout the arrangement to ensure that no gaps are present.
